Between now and 2025 BT Openreach and all suppliers, such as BT, Sky, TalkTalk etc. that use the Openreach network are gradually transitioning from traditional phone lines to VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone lines. This means that at some stage your landline phone will no longer be fed to your home via a traditional copper cable, however your broadband connection may still use this cable, but not for telephony. If you have a full fibre/fibre to the home/ultra-fast connection to your home it will be via a fibre connection.

Instead of plugging your telephone into a telephone socket, it has to be plugged into the socket on the back of your router, typically labelled PHONE, LINE or VoIP (or a symbol indicating same). Don’t worry if you have extension sockets elsewhere in you home, give us a call and we can connect them up for you.
We sometimes receive a concerned phone call or email from a potential customer to say that their phone line has stopped working, but the broadband is working okay. This can often happen immediately after an upgrade or sometimes a week or two after. Alternatively, it may just happen if your provider is updating their infrastructure.
Virgin Media are also transitioning across to VoIP and so you may find a similar scenario applies to phone lines supplied by Virgin Media. For further information visit the Virgin Media website.
